Fallout – Season 1 Review
I really liked this one!
Fallout season 1 is told in three separate but interconnected storylines in multiple time periods. There is the bounty collecting ghoul cowboy, the naïve vault dweller looking for her father with her unlikely companion, a rouge military peon, and the family and friends she left behind in vault 33.
The season was interesting from beginning to end and apart from some truly terrible sex jokes, really good for a game adaptation.
Plot
The year is 2296. in 2077 there was a devastating nuclear war that basically leveled societies across the globe. In preparation for an impending nuclear war, American corporation, Vault-Tec, built a series of fallout bunkers called “vaults” where people could purchase safety in the event of nuclear war. These vaults were incredibly secure and capable of storing enough food to support a colony of people for hundreds of years. The goal was to be able to recolonize the world with red blooded ‘merican vault dwellers after this apocalypse. But there was a catch. To save humanity, what if there are certain adaptations that need to take place? Vault-Tec executives designed different psychological experiments for each vault, turning the survival of humanity into a competition. Some vaults were… dark… and others were relatively benign in comparison. Some vault dwellers didn’t even know they were being experimented on. This leads us to our first main character, Lucy.
Lucy (Ella Purnell) is a sheltered vault dweller from vault 33. Her vault is actually in a three vault system, where sister vaults 31 and 32 are close and in contact with each other. Although these vaults are usually sealed from each other (and always from the outside world) they at times exchange people for marriages when bloodlines start getting too… close.
Lucy is excited because a marriage has been arranged for her with a native of vault 32. This breaks the heart of her cousin, Chet (Dave Register), who she had been dating for 10 years, but in her own words,
“It’s normal for cousins to fool around when we’re young, but it’s not a sustainable sexual practice for the future”.
Ooof.
So, Lucy’s wedding day comes around and everything is going great. A bunch of people from vault 32 come over with the groom for the festivities and the wedding is concluded without a hitch. This all comes to an end though when the so called vault dwellers from 32 reveal themselves as raiders and begin viciously attacking (and killing) vault 33 dwellers. Led by a woman named Moldavar (Sarita Choudhury), the raiders kidnap Lucy’s father, Hank (Kyle MacLachlan), and escape into the above world.
From here Lucy sets out on a mission to rescue her dad, no matter what.
Along the way she meets several interesting characters, each with excellent, fully fleshed out backstories and motivations.
Will Lucy find and rescue her dad? What friendships and unlikely partnerships will she make along the way? What is that random guy smuggling in his severed head? Watch Fallout season 1 to find out!
My Thoughts
I’d definitely recommend this one if you want to watch a goofy, apocalyptic Hero’s Journey type show. It is very entertaining and the way it changes character perspectives and timelines you’ll never get bored. I will say though, it can be very bloody, violent, and it also depicts suicide. Also, OMG the sex jokes later on are soooo cringy. BUT if you can get past all that, what’s left is a fun, interesting story.
