Unfrosted – Movie Review

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

The funniest thing about Unfrosted was that it was a 93 minute cereal commercial.

Plot

“Two pop-tarts please. Leave the box.” – George

Unfrosted begins with a young boy (Isaac Bae) running away. With a bandana filled with supplies tied to a stick, he walks to a nearby diner where he sits at the bar next to a stranger and orders 2 pop-tarts. Reading the idyllic story on the back of the box about how pop-tarts came to be, he proclaims that it’s a pretty good story. The man he sits beside tells him it’s a bunch of baloney, and that he would know because he’s the person who writes those stories.

Noticing the young boy’s supplies, the man makes eye contact with the bartender, and to distract the boy until his parents arrive, he begins telling the story of how pop-tarts really came to be.

There is a lot of random stuff going on in this film, but the plot is essentially that Kellogg and Post are locked in a serious cereal rivalry. Kellogg is beating Post for the time being, but Post has something new in their back pocket. Post has the idea of a toastable breakfast cake filled with a jelly center. Sure, they have this idea because they stole research from the man at the beginning of the film, Bob Cabana (Jerry Seinfeld), but Kellogg had given up the hope of this breakfast cake even being possible.

After finding out Post is developing this new breakfast item, Kellogg CEO, Edsel Kellogg III (Jim Gaffigan), feels threatened. Instead of coming up with a new idea to compete, Kellogg decides to make a better jelly filled breakfast cake than Post by any means necessary (like making deals with a Puerto Rican sugar lord).

My Thoughts

unfrosted

This movie tries really hard to make you laugh. But it’s just not that funny. At times, it feels like you are constantly getting random jokes thrown at you, but not many land.

Another thing Unfrosted tries really hard to do is distract you from it being a 93 minute Kellogg commercial. With bright, vibrant colors everywhere and so much random stuff happening all the time, it feels like the story is being told by someone who keeps forgetting to stay on subject. A constant throughout the film though, is Kellogg and Post (mostly Kellogg) branding, and random scenes involving copious amounts of cereal. This movie will really make you want to eat some corn flakes, because they are freaking everywhere.

The story is mostly nonsense, but if you like dry humor and just want to be entertained by pretty colors, constantly changing characters and stories, and a whole army of popular actors and comedians, you might like this one.

I’d normally say go pop yourself some popcorn and check it out, but I think in this case you might just want to get some cereal. Happy watching!
