American Horror Story – Delicate – Season 12 Review
Unfortunately, this might be an all-time low for American Horror Story.
Plot
This season revolves around actress Anna Victoria Alcott (Emma Roberts). She and her husband, Dex Harding (Matt Czuchry), have been struggling to conceive a baby via IVF and it’s been deeply affecting her. So much so, that people around her think she might be losing it.
At the beginning of the season, Anna wakes up in the middle of the night to find a mysterious dark hooded intruder in her bed. After calling 911, she looks down to find a picture of her dividing embryo ripped on the ground, and her hands are covered in what looks like blood with more stains all over the carpet.
The scene cuts to one week earlier. After finding that her egg retrieval has been scheduled for an earlier date than she thought, Anna rushes to her appointment. She sees a strange woman dressed in all black on the way to the clinic, but quickly forgets after seeing her face on a billboard. The egg retrieval seems a bit sus with the doctor and nurses wearing all red, but honestly Anna’s anesthesia is starting to kick, so maybe she’s just seeing things… right?
After her appointment, Dr. Hill (Denis O’Hare) is excited to tell her he was able to collect 9 eggs, so he is feeling very enthusiastic about their chances. As Anna leaves the doctor’s office, she runs into an older woman dressed in black who very mysteriously tells her “I know you,” and “You are her.” That dialogue though. SpoOoOoky. Outside, Anna sees the strange woman from earlier watching her again, but her husband suggests that maybe she’s just there to see Dr. Hill since he is such a sought after fertility specialist. Anna feels like she might be a stalker, but Dex brushes off her fears.
As the season goes on and her pregnancy develops, more and more strange things begin happening to Anna. She starts hallucinating, behaving uncharacteristically, her stalkers seem to be following her everywhere, and she becomes obsessed with the possibility of Dex having an affair with the new artist he’s working with. Along the way, Anna has to make multiple decisions between what would be best for her developing baby and what would be best for her career.
Will Anna be able to have it all? Is her publicist, Siobhan Corbyn (Kim Kardashian) as good a friend as she claims to be? Is Anna actually carrying the antichrist like in Rosemary’s Baby? Watch American Horror Story: Delicate to find out!
My Thoughts
I’ve been a fan of American Horror Story since Murder house, but Delicate really fell flat for me. It started out fairly strong, but the longer the season went on, the more vapid and shallow the story felt. After the end of a season like Murder House you feel like an entire story full of twists and turns has been jammed into those 12 episodes. Delicate is only 9 episodes, and the story doesn’t really change or evolve. What you expected from the first couple episodes is basically what’s still happening at the end. The acting just isn’t on the same level as earlier seasons either. The characters are ALL very one note and the only actors actually emoting were Emma Roberts and Matt Czuchry. It’s crazy. Just use your face muscles people! Oh, wait.
Also, the ending was pretty terrible. It’s like the writers just wanted it to be over, and honestly, I don’t blame them.
That’s it! If you’re curious about American Horror Story’s newest season, check out American Horror Story: Delicate on Hulu.
