3 Body Problem – Season 1 Review
“Shit time to be a scientist.” – Da Shi
More like shit time to be a human in 3 Body Problem.
Okay, so this was a weird one. I mean really weird. But, if you like science fiction, you might really enjoy it.
Imagine scientists all over the world begin finding that data from experiments over the last 50 years are wrong with no explanation. Science just isn’t making sense anymore. People even go as far as to say science is broken. Prominent scientists are committing suicide or ending their careers.
Fully explaining this movie without giving out too many spoilers is going to be nearly impossible, so here’s what’s going to happen while you watch this series. The first episode isn’t going to make a whole lot of sense. It hops back and forth through time from the 1960’s in Inner Mongolia, China to present time London. Episode by episode more truths will be revealed like pealing back layers on an… onion, maybe?
As truths are reveled and everything begins falling into place, you actually start understanding what is happening. This knowledge doesn’t make you feel much better though. There’s an impending sense of doom about it. You get the feeling that bad things might happen in the future, in about 400 years that is. But hey, maybe it’ll be good for us in the long term, right? Probably not. No, definitely not.
Around the end of episode 2, the show starts to get interesting, but unfortunately this momentum gets knocked off course (foreshadowing) and a little over halfway through the show, it starts to drag a little. Maybe it’s just because I binged the whole series in one day (I’m built different) but starting around episode 6 I was really just wanting to get through the last episode to find out how the first season would end. In the last episode, momentum picked up again with the help of some light comedic relief, but it ends on an overall grim note.
Overall there are a few things that don’t make a ton of sense or could possibly be teeny tiny plot holes, but there are parts of the story that are undeniably cool. I’m a sucker for shows involving high tech VR that transport you into a realistic game and for a couple episodes it really had me hooked!
I would say if you like sci-fi and if you like movies with a bit of an… extraterrestrial twist, check this one out! I will say though it did depict a lot of suicide. So if that is something you might be a bit sensitive to, this might not be the show for you.
That’s it! Grab your favorite snackies, reach for your remote and check out 3 Body Problem!
