Fantasy Island – Movie Review

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

It was pretty terrible.

Plot

What’s your fantasy?

This is the question 5 individuals were asked after meeting at a luxury island resort rumored to make your fantasy, however obscure, a reality. The only rule is you must see your fantasy through to its natural conclusion. Weird rule, but okay.

Some fantasies are… more basic. While others seem downright impossible to fulfil short of holograms or paid actors.

J. D. (Ryan Hansen) and Brax (Jimmy O. Yang) are stepbrothers who are super excited to be on this island getaway. Their ultimate fantasy is to “have it all.” Their idea of “it all” is a mansion filled with models, drugs and alcohol, and one hell of an armory. Like I said, pretty basic, but who am I to judge someone else’s fantasy.

Melanie (Lucy Hale) is a once socially outcast woman who is still living in the past. Her fantasy? To make her childhood bully pay for branding her a “psycho stalker”.

Patrick’s (Austin Stowell) fantasy is to become a military hero like his father before him.

Gwen (Maggie Q) wants a redo on the moment she regrets most: declining a proposal from the love of her life.

Upon beginning their fantasies, each guest is shocked to find how real their fantasies seem. Their time on the island takes a dramatic turn though when they realize just how real these fantasies are.

Will the mysteries of the island be revealed? Will you be able to watch the whole movie without dozing off? Watch Fantasy Island to find out!

My Thoughts

I got my hopes up a little after seeing Fantasy Island was produced by the makers of Get Out. Oh, what a letdown. The twist was asinine. It’s like the producers scrambled at the end trying to figure out a twist, coming up with multiple options, and choosing the one that made the least sense. And then in the end it was like they got tired of telling the story so just conveniently wrapped it up.

Here’s the thing. If you’re down for a B tier horror movie that’s cheap entertainment, check out Fantasy Island. If you like to pick apart the plots of movies and really think about what’s happening, you’ll hate this movie and might want to pick something different.
